Two-term Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess was the first to announce his candidacy for Mayor last November and his campaign seems to be going well. I photographed him recently at his home and was warmly welcomed by him and his family. I wish him all the best in his bid for mayor this fall.

Reverend Bernice King at SPU

November 9th, 2012

Reverend Bernice King earlier this year visited the campus of Seattle Pacific University and I was assigned to photograph her for their Alumni Magazine. King is the daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. As one of today’s leading speakers, King is author of Hard Questions, Heart Answers. She was on campus to speak and meet with students and faculty. She was a inspirational speaker and was gracious in meting and speaking with the students after her lecture and gave me time to step outside for a portrait.

I had the pleasure of shooting an assignment for a publication of Lakeside recently.  They needed a portrait of Seattle executive Craig Stewart, president and a trustee of the Apex Foundation, a private family foundation of Jolene and Bruce McCaw with a focus on children, families and education, for an article in their upcoming issue. I always enjoy these assignments an getting the chance to meet such interesting people.

Mack Waldron is the owner of Tula’s Restaurant and Jazz Club on the east side of Second Avenue, between Blanchard and Bell St. Tula’s presents the best of the local jazz scene 6 nights a week. Mack was a pleasure to photograph a few days ago. He has a constant twinkle in his eyes and was happy to tell the story of how he came to open Tula’s after his stint in the U.S.Navy. From an old piece from Earshot Jazz Magazine:  “It should be immediately noted that the austere rock-of-a-man behind the sprawling, green bar is one Elliot “Mack” Waldron, Tula’s owner and chief bartender. A native Texan, Mack is a veteran jazzman with 26 years experience in Navy bands as a player and bandleader. In the service he was considered a players’ bandleader. Today he’s considered a players’ club owner” Continue reading here.

Here is another in a series of corporate executive portraits from recent assignments. As always it is a challenge to try and get something different that works and is satisfying as a creative portrait. Charlotte heads a group of five executives in the Real Estate business and I photographed her and all the members of her team in a beautiful home facing Lake Washington. It had wonderful light and great details. She was really great to work with. this was my favorite shot of her.

Graphic artist and designer Michael Strassburger co-founder of Seattle Design Studio Modern Dog needed a new head shot and I was tapped for the task. How do you impress a modern dog designer? Not sure but he liked this look made 100% of natural light. It was a little intimidating since Strassburger is one of the powerhouse designers behind Seattle based Modern Dog. “Their heady mix of intuitive design, cheeky humor and punk rock aesthetics has made them unique among design firms, and a hell of a lot of fun. Their work is often seen in the rock poster arena, but they cover a much larger social terrain and their clients include K2 Snowboards, Blue Q, Coca-Cola, Swatch and Nordstrom.
